What is library instruction?

"Library instruction" subjects include: research skills, information literacy skills, and library tools. We offer many different forms of library instruction:

  • Orientations: Introduction to the library and its services. These are conducted upon request both virtually and in the classroom.
  • Classroom visitsA librarian visits your class for a designated amount of time that you have agreed upon. These visits are usually paired with an assignment, paper, or project that involves online research. The librarian's role here is to provide some instruction and to allow students time to try online research on their own with some guidance. (Click the "classroom visits" link to request a visit!)
  • Virtual workshops: Focused one-hour sessions on particular topics, including: using the databases, citations with Endnote, systematic review searching, choosing a research topic, and more. If there is a workshop you would like the library to help with or conduct, please email us. We're receptive to requests.
  • Research appointments: Half-hour sessions where a librarian can provide guidance and advice for your research (at any point in the research process). Can be an individual appointment or a small group.

Asynchronous instruction:

  • Canvas tools:
    • There is a "Library & Learning Resources" module in the CHS Student Affairs course.
    • There is a "Meet the librarian" page in Canvas.
  • LibGuides: You are reading a LibGuide right now! A LibGuide is a webpage made by a librarian on a specific topic. We would be happy to make a LibGuide for your course. This could contain any of the following:
    • Links to resources that students need (textbooks, databases, research tools)
    • A slideshow with instructions on specific research skills
    • Links to video tutorials for Endnote or databases (or other tools)
